Aisling did not know what to ask. He was essentially telling her that the release of the Phoenix would only come, once they found it within her memories and emotions. Then she looked at him with a bit of a queer, questioning look. "And ye will kin all m'most inner fears, dreams and such?"

How odd it would be to have another know her most inner workings. She tilted her head slightly. "Bry, please dae nae think me ungrateful boot I be nae sure I can dae such as this. I dae nae kin ifn' I CAN face that which I 'ave buried deep away." She sighed, "Though I dae nae think I 'ave a choice, aye?" She hoped he had an alternative to this plan but somehow she thought he too might be very uncomfortable with this and would not have suggested it if there was a reasonable alternative.

"Well, since the other most reasonable alternative involves setting you on fire...," he replied dryly, "we've not a lot of options, it seems. Also, no, I would not know all of your dreams and fears. Only the ones we would pass through in seeking, and even these; the way of this sort of magic, when we part again, those things which are not of both of us, but of the other, I in your case, and you in mine, will fade much as dreams fade, slipping further and further into a fog, until they are gone entire."

He tilted his head, as if straining to hear something far, far off.

"No, it will not return to this place. It has realized we must come to it eventually if we wish to free the Phoenix; it will not try to challenge you in a place so strong in your joy. We will need to go soon."

He walked slowly to the edge of the bluff, staring down into the ocean, into the spray of the crashing waves. He could see her eyes there, and in the deep water her hair, broken up by churning surf. A quiet sigh left his lips; this was going to be harder than he'd hoped.

Aisling knew even before Bry spoke that they would have to give hunt. It was a sudden awareness of the fact. And to leave would mean leaving the protection and the joy the bluff brought to her, but to remain would give the kindred blood time to grow in strength over her physical being and her mind. She saw Bry walk to the edge and stare over. A feeling of distateful realization washed over her.

She had felt relieved when Bry had explained to her how this would work and its non lasting effects. Remembering only the steps they take together to find the phoenix. Well that was as it was and there really was no reason to linger. She walked up beside Bry.

"I'm ready." She took in a breath and then let it out slowly. "I 'ope we find the phoenix in time Bry. But...if nae...tell Aiden...tell m'family and friends I will wait for them in the light." She swallowed then looked at him. Her voice a bit stronger. "But dae nae let me become a creature o' the night."

She suddenly felt remorse for putting such a burden on the mage. But Ash knew he would and could see to whatever needed to be done.

The mage nodded, tearing his gaze from the eyes of the sea. "Have no fear of such things, Ashly," he said quietly, as he turned to face her fully. For a moment the image of a stern, imposing black tower hung like a phantom in the air behind him, then it faded away, taking with it the ocean; a heavy fog ringed them, leaving just a small perch of land. Thunder rolled, muted by the thick vapors. Deep in the fog, there was for a moment a flare of yellow-orange; but the swirling fog obscured it as quickly as it came.

The fog parted, revealing another tower, one less foreboding, more familiar. A place of healing - and yet there hung in the air a tension - here was a place of secrets kept and truths concealed for the assumption of a greater good.

He regarded Ashly with a raised eyebrow. "Sheehan Tower. I wonder what we're meant to find - or not find here."

He made a brief shooing gesture with his hand, as to indicate she should lead the way.

Aisling looked to Sheehan tower as one looked upon their home when returning from a long trip. So many memories would come flooding back. But a few stood out more than others.

She did as beckoned and lead them toward the tower but instead of entering through the front of the tower, Ash led Bry around the outside of the circular tower and down as a narrow corridor began to descend from the outside. A stone wall and the wall of the tower formed the pathway down.

Once they descended 3/4 of the circle around and 20 feet down, there stood a door. It was a very small wooden door. They would both have to duck down slightly to get through it. Once inside, Ash continued to a platform that had stairs ascending up to the main tower and descending down to the bowels of the tower. She chose the later.

The musty smell of the tower was a good one to her. She had loved the tower and all its secrets. She continued on until they could descend no further. "This be where the supplies were stored for the plague or a war and other things that could bring the castle tae a halt and would require necessities and medical treatment." He would see in the rooms as they passed for the doors were open.

Then she walked into a rather average sized room though it was elongated and curved to follow the circle of the tower. "In 'ere I would work upon things that would 'elp advance the study o' 'ealing." She walked over to a table that still had the device she had constructed for seeing things that were not seen well by the eye. Eoin had managed a dwarven lens at her request and together they had fastened tae a design that she thought might work. And it did. It was strong enough, you could see things in water that the naked eye could not. Living things.

She looked about and her eyes stopped upon a particular place in the wall opposite of her. She looked to Bry. Her eyes having more of a serious nature to them. She walked over and slowly ran her hand over a rock, then placed pressure in a spot that suddenly caused the wall to move. She stared until the small door was opened. Then looked back to Bry.

"Advancement o' knowledge within 'ealing though does nae always come wit' a welcome." She stood there looking into the darkness of the hidden room.

It was foreboding, a darkness deeper than the night, a liquid dark that coated what it touched and whispered of secrets kept.

"Ay'," he murmured gently. "I recall well enough this event."

Something changed ... shifted. It was not something that could be seen, more felt. From the darkness walked corpses in various states of dismemberment, each as Ashly had laid them open to learn. The air grew heavy with preservative stink and the undercurrent of rot. They barred the way to the secret chamber. Voices, worn and rasping spoke condemnations.

"Damned! Damned we were, infirm and broken and rejected at the Gates ... because of you!"

They raised emaciated limbs covered in weeping sores to point fingers at Ashly. "Now you are damned as ussss ... was it worth it?"

Aisling drew a difficult breath at the sight and smell of ghosts from her past. She thought about those lost souls that she had performed her explorations on in the name of furthering knowledge. She thought about why she did it.

Then she would pull herself up to her full height and lift her head high. "Ifn' ye were turned away from the gates tae yer afterlife, I must question the reason fer such. I mean, what was learned from each o' ye, after yer passin', be verra valuable information tae save lives o' those still livin'. This bein' a noble cause indeed and each o' ye were the reason it could 'appen? What God or Goddess would turn away such heroic acts o' goodness? Ma'aps embracin' yer foolish b'liefs in death be what keeps ye from yer afterlife."

She made motion to push them aside as she attempted to gain entry into the darkened room, carrying with her one of the lit torches from its place on the wall.

The very first corpse she had autopsied was a man in his late fifties who had destroyed his liver with hard core liquor over the duration of his life. He was suddenly the only ghost left before her. His body had indeed been her first and greatest discovery for she had examined him thoroughly and found much information from it.

Aisling closed her eyes tightly then opened them once again to find even he had disappeared. She turned to Bry. As if to answer an unasked question, she lifted a brow. "I 'ave nae regrets for such actions."

Re: ASH to EMBERS

Post by Caillean Meldrum on Wed Oct 14, 2009 5:13 pm

Surprisingly, Angelina woke with a scream during the night and the nanny was unable to quiet her despite the usual caresses and soothing songs. Caillie had put both the nanny and child in an adjoining chamber with instructions that if Caillie was ever needed, there was to be no hesitation to rap on the door that joined the rooms. She had just blown out the taper when the signal came. Caillie was out of bed in a flash, throwing on her robe as she went to the door. "Wha' is it?" her voice filled with concern.

Wee Angelina held out her arms to the Queen and Caillie lovingly took the child from nanny with assurance that all would be well, sending nanny back to try to get some rest.

"Now, now, My Precious, we do nae want tae wake th' King! Let us sit here by th' window an' watch th' stars dance in th' sky," she whispered. Angelina seemed to respond to the melodic voice though the remanants of her sobs emerged once or twice as her body shuddered.

"I know, Sweet One, ye miss both your Mum an' your Grandmama bu' I promise ye they will both return tae ye soon. They miss ye even more!"

Once again, as she held Angelina close her to bosom, she felt the love and peace the child seem to emit. No matter what problems of the day remained in her mind, a peacefulness overtook her once she held the child close. "Ye are truly an' Angel, Little One, an' your Mum has named ye aptly.

The two sat quietly while the glow of the moon crept across their faces as the night turned into morning. Both had slept...and slept deeply and both woke refreshed and in joyful spirits. "Good morning tae ye, Angelina!" She held the wee one up over her head and buried her in kisses that brought laughter to the bairn. Let us find us a King! Perhaps he will share his breakfast wi' us!" She laughed as the two moved to the Royal bed in search of her beloved husband, burrowed beneath the covers.

There was a faint sound, a sour note ... and then a faint, distant laughter that seemed to steal the warmth around them. The mage lifted a hand in the manner one might use to shield ones eyes from the sun, and peered into the recess from whence the phantom corpses had risen. His expression darkened, one corner of his mouth curling downward.

"Clever. More clever than a parasite ought to be. It is ... not just hiding. It is setting a path. Each challenge teaches it something about you. And about me now."

He sprung the hawthorn wand into his hand again; a bloom of white fire lit upon the tip. As he touched it to the archstone, both he and Ashly could feel an odd sort of giddiness, a sort of light tickling sensation that ran up and down the body as the wand traced the outline of the passage, limning it with that pale fire. When he was done, he turned to Ash.

"So then, do we move cautiously, an easier, less scarring path of slow adjustment through memory, or should we perhaps try to outwit the enemy by trying a different tactic?"

Re: ASH to EMBERS

All was coming clear to Aisling. This evil was probing their weaknesses and strengths through her emotional output to her memories. This memory would show her strength for she truly had no regrets. But there were things that would show her weaknesses. Memories that were filled with regret and fears that she buried long ago.

She looked to Bry. "I think I kin what ye mean and I fear ifn' we continue down this path, this evil will use our weaknesses against us to gain control." She began to pace as was notorious of Ash when she was nervous or in deep thought.

"I can feel the physical battle be almost won by this malevolent blood for even now I sense m'body tremblin' among the grass by the lake. Tremblin' fer the want o' fresh blood. I need the phoenix Bry. The 'ealin' power o' the phoenix, I fear, be my only 'ope. What alternative might we choose? 'ow can we gain leverage from this nemesis without the hunt?"

She stopped pacing and looked at him outlined in the light he had created, throwing shadows across his face and increasing the mystic that was this powerful mage.

Outside of her mind, Aisling's body did tremble. The sky was totally dark now with the thick blackness that came in the form of clouds. It blocked even the reflection of the lake. Her body twisted one way and then another with her lips pulled back to expose the elongated teeth. But her eyes remained closed and her consciousness missing. Lightening began to ripple around the edges of the darkened sky above fairy Lake. Ominous indeed.

The mage took a slow breath, disciplining his thoughts. "We have been, if you will, slowly swimming downward the paths of memory and fear. Getting used to the blackness and things one would as soon not think about, regardless of whether or not one can forget."

He regarded her, reached out to place a hand on her right shoulder and squeeze gently.

"As I see it, there are two ways. Neither will be pleasant. The first is to go directly to the worst of it, if you can lead the way. Confront the time in your life when you were most afraid - and it may not even be for yourself. When you were most in need of aid and none came. There is where the monster will lair, where it can strike out at you with your own night terrors, your own needs and insecurities. Overcome the beast, master it utterly, and you will be able to expel it from your person, like pus from a wound."

"The other way is to try and force the Phoenix to manifest. I know - I know you have tried and been trying. However, it may be that there is enough of the living in our merging to call it forth."

He paused, meeting her gaze, his expression grave.

"But even if it works, Ashly ... even if it works, there is the real probability your physical body, heavy with the taint will not be purified, but consumed; reduced beyond embers, beyond even ashes."

Re: ASH to EMBERS

Aisling was forced to think back upon where that dark space in her past might lie. It was not as though she had to ponder it, for she knew exactly what the worst moment of her life was. But to have buried it so deep and to bring it to the surface now terrified her. She barely made it through without losing her sanity then. What if she lead him there and the demon blood in her could not be defeated? What if it were too late...too strong for them?

On the other hand, if Bry suspected right, that the life force of them both would be enough to release the phoenix and let it come forth, only to find that it is too late for her physical body, then death was eminant as well.

She paced back and forth several times as she thought of these things. Suddenly she stopped and looked to Bry. "And ye Bry, will it mean yer life if we fail either way?" Her soft blue eyes showed the genuine concern that she felt. She hoped he would tell her no. She hoped he would tell her that he would survive, unscathed either way for he was magic. But she feared it might not be his response.

She swallowed hard as she studied his face, awaiting the answer.

Re: ASH to EMBERS

She was canny, and had struck to the heart of an issue he'd hoped to avoid. Perhaps this was best; with it out in the open, it could not be used as a lever by that which opposed them against them.

"I chose this road, Ashly, knowing full well the dangers that might be found upon it, that one day I might need to lay down even my life for Solurius and its people. I will give no less to you.

"Should we fail before the monster, I will destroy us both before it can take control; before it can use you, before it can attempt to usurp my talents. I have enough power bound to me to ensure that there will be no other victims. In that, yes, my life would be as forfeit as your own.

"If we call upon the phoenix ... I make no promises, Ashly. It may recognize the nature of the issue, or it may not. Even if it does, I cannot say with certainty that it will be able - or willing - to channel its power in a way that affects only you.

His voice shifted, taking on a gentler tone, and he offered a soft smile.

"I will say this however. No matter what passes, I will not abandon you. No matter what might be revealed, what things might be. In life, or in death I will see you as far as the road goes. You deserve nothing less."

Back at Fairy Lake, as the approaching darkness and storm drew nigh, there was a soft sound; a gentle murmuring that seemed to rise from all around; a man's voice, singing soft lullabies, more a thing of sound and tone than actual words; gentle sounds of comfort and love that worked to form a cocoon of safety and trust around the body laying there. It was a simple thing, and from this simplicity came its strength, for it carried nothing of duplicity or hidden purpose, nothing that could be turned on its side and made to seem ill. Just quiet, comforting sounds that spoke silently to the body, encouraging it to let go and relax, fighting the twitching trembling motions of the other within not by providing conflict, but by enfolding all in gentleness.

Re: ASH to EMBERS

Post by LadySheehan on Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:07 am

Aisling's body reacted as Bry thought it would. The painful twisting and turning and yearning for blood was eased slowly as the gentle tones reached her and built the safety and trust of the cocoon that invisibly surrounded her.

Aisling knew this immediately and without having to worry upon her physical body, it gave her strength in her mind.

Her thoughts cleared as she listened to Bry. She thought about Blu and his children and how devastated they would be if anything happened to Bry. It was a painful burden, that by nature, she wished not to carry. But Bry spoke frankly and truly to her and she knew he had been aware of the dangers from the beginning. Even more than she had been.

Here in this state of mind, Aisling was a beautiful as she had ever been. Her eyes were clear and filled with the softest blue. Those blues would look upon this well respected Mage with such appreciation that no words were needed to tell him how grateful she felt. She thought upon her choice to make. A final thought of Aiden would help her to make her decision. She knew he understood how much she loved him no matter if she forfeited her life. It was comforting. It took her a bit of time but finally she would speak.

"Bry, I do nae trust m'self tae return tae the darkest hour o' m'past for the fear and the pain and the tragedy be preserved there and I fear it would weaken me tae the point o' nae bein' able tae defeat this damned kindred blood. I fear it would be certain death for us both."

She looked around them then looked back to him. She could see a wavy, unclear picture o' the forest trail she and her two children had taken in trying to escape the demon attacks at SeaCrest. Fading in and out about them, the portal in which the 3 demonlords appeared. But she would not let it go any further. Her heart beating rapidly in her still body upon the ground at even the slightest focus to the memory.

But she would breath deeply and her heartbeat; as irregular as it was now, would slow. The vision around them would disappear. She could not bring herself to bring it foward. Her fear was too strong.

She looked back to Bry. "The phoenix 'as n'er failed me b'fore Bry. A gift from the man I 'ave loved since time began. It 'as always redeemed me when darkness would invade. I must trust it shall nae be m'demise nor yours. Unless it be the will o' the light." She paused a moment making sure this decision was the one she truly thought best.

"We can only 'ope that it be a strong enough gift tae defeat this evil and return us tae our lives tae carry on our work. I choose tae call forth the Phoenix Bry ifn' it can be done sae."

She looked around once more than back to him. "Boot should we succeed, ye must release from my body and mind the second the Phoenix be free. Aye? Promise me Bry. If'n it be meant fer me tae end m' ways 'ere and burn in the fires o' the light, I shall dae sae alone, promise me!"

There was a desperation in her voice that could not be hidden from the mage that was willing to give his life for her, even after all the years and worlds that separated them.

The storm around her physical body raged on with the winds picking up to a speed that would hurl branches back and forth. The lightening flashed all around Fairy Lake, putting it into an eerie light. Still, Aisling's body lay still and calm, cradled in the soft tones created by the powerful mage.

The mage smiled gently, raising a hand in forebearance as she made her impassioned request.

"It shall be as it must, Ashly. But ken I have no great desire to die, nor particular inclination to be roasted while still living. Once we have assurity of success, I will certes draw myself out."

He reached a hand into his robes; it seeming to disappear into the fabric as though the material were the surface of a black glossy lake. When he withdrew his hand again, he held in it a silver dagger with a curved blade, set with rubies and bloodstones.

"In this place and this time, symbols possess power. I must draw a small amount of your blood here as well," he commented, and without changing expression, he lay open his own left forearm with the blade, continuing, "as my own. We are joined, but to draw forth the Phoenix, we will need to be, ritually, as one; and as pleasant as the other method of achieving this might be, we are both bonded to others who hold the primacy of our hearts; so we are left with this method."

The blood welled to the surface, but it did not spill over; at least, not yet. He looked to her, indicated she should extend her forearm in turn.

Aisling watched him as she listened. The dagger made her lift her brow but then as he explained she began to understand. His comment on the alternative way made her cheeks blush and the corners of her mouth turn slightly upward. Then it would pass quickly as he cut his arm.

She was afraid to look at the blood welling on his arm for fear it would have a very bad adverse reaction on her but strangely enough, she did not find herself longing for its taste, nor overpowered by it's metallic aroma. When she realized this, she would relax a bit and lift her arm to him. "Thank ye fer bein' sae delicate m'friend." He would take that how he chose for there was no additional remark.

As he carefully performed the cut, Aisling's face never changed accept a small quiver at the corner of her mouth. Her own blood began to ease up into sight as well. She brought her blue eyes up to look at his face. "I 'ope this works Bry. It 'as to."

Re: ASH to EMBERS

"Focus your thoughts; clear your mind. Now, here, to bring forth the Phoenix, you must become like it, you must simply be, as it does."

He put the knife away, shifting, sliding his hand along her arm, clasping her forearm near the elbow in a way that brought the two wounds into contact. There was a slight pain-sting, as might be expected, but not so strong as might be feared. The blood blended; there was an odd stirring sensation; fragments of memories heretofore unknown blending. He could feel them slowly dissolve away as she stopped considering them. Withdrawing his arm from her own, gently; the attunement was complete.

From his experience, it began with a flush; a slow warmth that blossomed within. What ought have quickly transformed into a pyre of sensation did not - there was resistance, a sense of something pulling away, preventing the full manifestation. He reached out toward it; toward the heat and the resistance.

They reached out, rather. For he could feel her presence, as he was sure she could feel his. He could feel now the fullness of what had been inflicted upon her, the cold and coiling death that slid through her veins. But he could feel also that its vile transformation was incomplete - it was held at bay by a blazing white purity that sat upon her breastbone and burned away the vileness to ash whenever the two essences touched. For a moment it flared outward, and there was a far-distant howling shriek. A brilliant plume of flame rocketed into the sky of the mindscape; it was powerful, mighty ... and insufficent. It darkened even as it soared the distance toward them, sputtering and falling.

"Ye'll have to forgive me later, I fear," he mumbled.

Her body was not strong enough to bridge the gap anymore ... but she was not alone this time. Attuned to her, the mage ... shifted ... becoming the bridge; for one crazed moment he seemed to stretch away from her impossibly far, as though made not of flesh and blood, but some sort of bewitched taffy; however, this sensation endured for barely a second; at this same time, there was a sudden sharp disorientation; around them, the dreamscape boiled away into a maelstrom of chaotic images; millions of fragments of broken dreams and fears ... and then the mage seemed somehow distant to her; she could still feel him inside, faintly, but as from some long long distance.

White radiance burst forth on the tip of a loud cry; one of parts exaltation, despair, accomplishment, demand, and every emotion great and small that stirred yet in her breast; its brilliance blinded, swept away all vision of anything else, like staring into the sun.

Then suddenly it was gone, and she was alone; in an utterly silent darkness. There was neither wise counsel nor maddening whispers here; just a detached sense of self, alone.

The sky of Fairy Lake was completely overcast - not the moon, nor even a single star's light shone down upon her body there. The clouds lingered, waiting for some as of yet unseen sign...

Re: ASH to EMBERS

Post by LadySheehan on Sat Oct 31, 2009 11:51 am

Aisling stayed very still. She stared into the darkness around her. Her ears striving to hear some sort of sound or movement. She fought to bring awareness of what had just occurred and what was now at this moment. Caution first and foremost but overshadowed by disconnection.

So alone. Bry had been there, a part of her thoughts, a strength reassuring her in what might come and then...the feel of essence being sucked from her, only to be replaced by filling her with...yes, with warmth. Yes, that was it, the light and the warmth. She had been incomplete without it and did not realize just how much until it filled her soul once more. But where was Bry now? And why did she feel so very alone?

Aisling brought her hand up before her face, feeling the remnants of a drop of blood as it slowly rolled down her arm. Small sparks, barely noticeable and in a varied pattern seemed to blink at her from the trail of blood, as if it were the residual of a magic far to powerful for her to comprehend. Only quiet acceptance could be given.

"Bry?" The whispered word echoed in the solitude around her.

Ash's body, still upon the ground next to Fairy lake, stirred slightly. Her eyelids fluttered...

Indeed, where was the mage?

Somewhere.

He hurtled through the landscape of memories, of memento mori, of dreams and drives; darkness was about him, ahead and following. It engulfed him; squeezing, pressing, thrusting fears and terrors upon him.

White radiance burst from him like a torch, throwing back the blackness, setting it to bubbling and boiling away into greasy black smoke. These fears were not his fears, though he knew them, not his terrors, and he gave them no power, gave them nothing to feed upon. He reached out to Ashly; feeling the calm circle of her mind amidst the swirling chaos trying to batter a way back in. With his other hand, he reached into the blackness ... and into fire. With both hands, he pulled - hard, tearing each from their moorings; his right hand and arm burst into flames that blackened the flesh instantly, the muscles cooking as the eternal one of fire burst forth. Across his chest and down the other arm the fire spread, flesh and fat melting and dripping away, leaving exposed muscle in their wake; the flame shot off into the darkness nearly as quickly as it came, heading back along the path he'd came; it flared, and roared a cry of challenge and freedom, rocketing into the depths, burning away everything; consuming fear, horror, memory itself as it flew unerringly toward Ash in her bubble of silence.

The mage watched the darkness around him roil and bubble. A thick, syrupy sound, like bubbles rising in tar and popping emerged. Useless right arm hung at his side; with his left, he drew the ancient university sabre. Something oozed from the darkness; shaped roughly in the manner of a man.

"I shall enjoy breaking you," it hissed, "and then using your miserable failure to erase the last resistance of this host." A crude black mass extruded from the stub that might have been its hand, forming a bulbous, diseased mockery of a blade, fat with tumorous growths that swelled and pulses.

There was silence for a long moment as the creature awaited a reply. When it became clear none was forthcoming, it stepped close, bringing the blade forward; the mage parried the blow with his saber; each stroke sending waves of pain rippling through his left arm and chest. He managed to beat back the thing's attacks each time, but barely.

"You cannot win - you must know this." A savage overhand swing came down; the mage sidestepped it, could feel the fetid wind of its passage.

"Must I? I've outlasted worse things than you before." He stepped inside the thing's guard, driving the saber deep, then ripping it out sideways; a gout of black and yellow-green foulness sprayed, but then the wound sealed over.

"Even if you managed - somehow - to overcome me, the strain would kill this body, ending you both." It flowed back suddenly, and the black blade shot forward; the mage's maneuver was imperfect and it skidded along his already burned ribs, tearing through flesh and bone alike. The mage coughed, eyes watering, wobbling.

"You are beaten."

He took the blade, sinking the tip into the ground at his feet. Another wracking cough, blood flowing freely. Then his lips began to shift, slowing forming a rictus smile.

"You ... do not understand ...

The black blade was raised again, set for a killing stroke.

"Not here ... to kill you." The rictus grin grew wider. "Jus' ... keep ... you," his words fell silent as he coughed and spat blood.

The black blade came down.

The mage sunk to the floor. "... distracted."

Within the confines of Aisling's mind, she continued to look around her in the darkness. She focused on Bry. Yes, she could still feel him but ever so distant he seemed. She reasoned out what must have
taken place. He had spoken of it taking both of their strengths to urge the phoenix forward but he was not with her now and neither was
the phoenix. She gave deep thought to this.

Then by his absence, yet not completely, she would come to the conclusion that he somehow was bringing the phoenix to her. Maybe an extention of her own energy that summons the phoenix. Then that would mean....but Aisling felt such a disconnection suddenly. She felt the presence of Bry waiver dramatically and felt her heart skip a beat then begin rapidly beating as a panic crept up in her.

She started to call his name loudly but as she opened her mouth, she thought she saw something approaching through blackness that hung
over and around her. A blaze that gave off light in what looked like a full circle around it. It was approaching quickly and grew in brightness. She could now see that the space behind it and all it
contained was devoured in flames.

Aisling's eyes opened wide, her mouth agape and her heart racing in her chest as she stared mesmerized...

Re: ASH to EMBERS

As she watched, it became brighter, hotter; heat haze making it impossible to make out any details but the roaring flame. Warm she had been, now warmer still; and still it came onward; distorting and turning to ashes everything nearby. Fast, faster ... the heat become discomforting; creating a dryness that started at her lips, then spread in, stealing the moisture within, causing the skin to crease.

It hadn't been like this before, and while she did not turn away, the part of her which was still human could not help but feel fear, a deep primordial fear, the other side of worship of humanity's relationship with fire, for what approached was not fire, the warming and sustaining friend, no, this was a fire that was great, terrible and utterly uncontrollable.

Closer, closer yet, and now discomfort blossomed into pain; the heat was too much as she toppled forward; first to her knees, then to the ground beneath; she screamed from the overwhelming sensation, and was horrified as the scream itself was killed off by the invading heat which flowed inside her, filling her, roasting and boiling her innards. Her mind shut down within fractions of a second.

---

The blade came down with a sickening crunch. The thing turned; the expression on its ill formed mein one of gloating triumph. This battle had taken far longer than any other conquest it had made, but now it was time to claim the prize. It sunk its limbs into the darkness surrounding it, the miasma of fears, jealousies, needs and wants and fed deeply now, growing larger with each second.

It did not notice the faint distortion in the air behind it. Did not notice the mage's body as it fell through the floor as though through the surface of some lake of liquid ebony, instead, fattened with its victory, it shifted ... travelling toward where it knew what was left of the woman remained.

It emerged, gigantic against the scenery, against the landscape of memories, of loves lost and found, of tender moments and savage intensities.

Seeing the phoenix, it immediately moved to capture the creature once more, paying no attention to the vaguely man-like pile of ashes on the ground nearby. The phoenix regarded it for a moment, as one might regard a particularly wet and challenging bit of wood for one's cookfire.

It spoke a single word.

A brilliant bluish-white pulse shot out from the creature, in all directions. This time, nothing was spared. Not memory, not intention. All became fire...

---

Fairy Lake

The rain kept falling, icy cold; chilling all that it touched. The soil fought mightily for a time, but inevitably became mud; Aisling's body sunk slowly into the morass. Even the fairy flits had taken shelter eventually at the intensity of the rainfall; there was therefore nobody to observe what happened next.

As the rain struck Ashly's body, half sunken into the mud, it began to hiss and steam, as if boiling away, creating an unusual fog that hung around her. Even the insects fled now, flying, burrowing, hopping, moving in whatever manner they could away from the body. The heat grew ... the mud caking on her flesh, a war between heat and wet now beginning.

Lightning struck her body; something tiny and dark arched into the night sky; the response was immediate; a titanic explosion of blue-white flame erupted outward; consuming everything within, then collapsing back downward, forming an outline roughly in the form of a mighty bird of prey, but far larger; ten foot high at the shoulder with an enormous wingspan. It shouted a cry to the heavens; as it always did when reborn. The rain stopped.

The mighty creature looked to the earth, looked to the ashes that were always and ever all that remained of its former self and the egg it rode in, then began to sing a wordless song; the sacred Ash gathered itself together and was bound in a small pouch which glided around the reborn phoenix's neck. It gave one last look around, then took flight ... to the east, and the ancient temple of the sun. An arc of reddish orange flame would mark the night sky as it travelled.
